How eBay fees are calculated

For most categories eBay charges a final value fee as a percentage of the total amount of the sale (the item price plus shipping, handling and the sales tax the buyer pays), plus a small per-order fee. In the US the standard rate for most categories is 13.6% on the first $7,500 and 2.35% on anything above it, and the per-order fee is $0.30 for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10. Some categories, such as books, movies and music, and guitars and basses, use different rates.

Other fees this calculator includes

  • Promoted Listings (general): the ad rate you choose, charged only when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within 30 days.
  • International fee: an extra percentage when you ship to a buyer outside your country.
  • Seller level: Top Rated Plus listings get a discount on the final value fee, while Below Standard sellers pay a higher rate.

The formula

Total sale = price + shipping + sales tax
Final value fee = total sale × category rate (+ above-threshold rate)
Profit = price + shipping − all eBay fees − item cost − your shipping cost

Sales tax is collected and paid to the state by eBay, so it is not part of your revenue. But it is part of the amount the final value fee is calculated on. That is why sellers who ignore it usually underestimate their fees.

Tips to pay less in fees

  • Price so that your margin still works after the ad rate, not before.
  • Keep your account Above Standard. A Below Standard rating raises your fees on every sale.
  • Check your category: a few categories have lower rates or no per-order fee above a price point.

FAQ

eBay Fee Calculator questions, answered

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most US categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale (item price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, 2.35% above that, plus $0.30 per order for orders of $10 or less or $0.40 for orders over $10. Ads, international sales and your seller level can add to or reduce this.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays, which includes the shipping and handling you charge.

Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total sale including the sales tax collected from the buyer, even though the tax itself is passed on to the state.

Are the rates in this calculator up to date?

The default rates were last checked in October 2026. eBay can change its fees at any time, so always confirm the rate for your category on eBay’s official fee page before making big pricing decisions.
